How to Be a Stylish Mom Even When You’re Exhausted
The dreaded mom frump slump.
You swear it won’t happen to you.
But then you have kids, and before you know it you’re wearing the same yoga pants on rotation, skipping haircuts and when was the last time you even shaved your legs??
And we’ve all been there: exhaustion, endless night feeds and getting pooped on 17 times a day. Welcome to motherhood!!
So if you’re looking for a fun way to start taking care of yourself, this post is for you.
Here are 30 small things you can do to fight the mom frump now. You deserve it, mama!
Why Bother Fighting The Mom Frump?
This isn’t about adopting a ‘me first’ attitude.
So if you’re feeling anxious about taking some time for yourself, please keep reading.
Because taking care of yourself is a duty. Remember that quaint old saying, ‘You can’t pour from an empty cup.’ Well, it’s true.
If you’re burnt out and stressed out, are you really being the best mom you can be?
So let’s have some fun with a 30-day stylish mom challenge.
Most of these 30 action steps can be done in just a few minutes.
And lots of these action steps are actually about making things easier so you can get ready quicker in the morning. Double win!!
30 Day Challenge to Beat The Mom Frump
1 | Go to The Doctor
Or dentist. Or optician. Or any other appropriate health care professional.
Let’s start by dealing with any nagging health issues. We wouldn’t deny our kids medical attention so don’t ignore any of your own health problems.
Because let’s be honest, it’s pretty hard to be stylish when you’re in discomfort. And, mama, this challenge is all about looking and feeling fabulous.
2 | Put a Decluttering Bag in Your Closet.
Yep, I’m going there.
One of the reasons we can find it difficult to get dressed in the morning is because not everything in our closets fit.
So let’s start decluttering stuff that doesn’t fit!
You don’t have to do this in one overwhelm-inducing decluttering session. Who’s got time for that??
Instead pop a bag in your closet and when you come across something that doesn’t fit, is stained or broken beyond repair, or you just simply don’t like anymore, toss it in the bag.
And when the bag is full, you can go through the clothes and sort them into piles to donate, trash, sell or pack away for another season of life.
3 | Get Some (Free) Style Advice
Today is about getting excited about looking stylish.
The Internet is teeming with free style advice perfect for moms. Here are a few of my favorite style resources for moms. Spend 10 minutes checking them out.
Putting Me Together
Now That I Can Do
Get Your Pretty On
I promise these lovely ladies will guide and inspire you to use what you already have and show you how to look put together with minimal effort.
And they’ll reassure you that looking stylish doesn’t have to be tough or time consuming. You can do this, mama!
4 | Create a Pinterest Board Vision Board
Who doesn’t love a vision board?
If you’re not sure what a vision board is, it’s basically a collection of inspiring images - either digital or cut from magazines - that represent the way you see yourself in the future.
So create a new secret Pinterest board and start dreaming, mama.
Pin whatever catches your sartorial eye: Colors, patterns, clothes, styles, well dressed people. Get it all on your vision board.
This is about reconnecting with your own personal style. Enjoy!!
5 | Edit Your Underwear
Yeah, shit just got real, mama!
Go open your underwear drawer and get rid of any underwear that is uncomfortable, damaged, or the wrong size.
And let’s remember that this challenge is all about feeling good and feeling good.
I’m also going to suggest that you get your bra size re-measured. You can do this yourself or head to the shops and get an expert to do it.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, fluctuating weight can leave lots of us wearing the wrong bra size.

6 | Check Your Posture
French and Italian women know that good posture is everything.
There’s no point wearing stylish clothes if you’re going to slump and slouch your way through the day.
And don’t worry, you don’t have to take ballet lessons or walk about with books piled on your head to master good posture.
You’ll feel - and look - 5 years younger in no time!
7 | Wear Your Perfume
Even if you’re staying home all day, spritz on some of your best stuff.
Too often we keep our good stuff for special occasions.
But why not wear it today? After all, perfume does have a shelf life! So enjoy it now.
Get spritzin’, mama!
8 | Book a Haircut
That’s right. Just pick up the phone. Call the hairdresser and make an appointment you WILL keep.
Doesn’t have to be a dramatic change. A simple trim will perk you right up.
And then find someone to look after the kids while you go to that appointment - this bit is CRUCIAL.
9 | Make a List of Hair Demands
Have you had the same hairstyle that you had when you were 16?
Are you sick of finding grey hairs but haven’t done anything about it?
Are you suffering with postpartum hair loss but haven’t asked for help?
Write down a list of your hair woes and promise yourself that you’ll take time to talk to your hairdresser at your next appointment.
Ask her opinion, pump her for insider product information and discuss your hair frustrations.
10 | Try Out a New Lipstick
If you don’t currently wear lipstick, you might be tempted to skip this. Don’t!! This challenge is about getting a little bit outside your comfort zone. If you’re still hesitant, why not try a tinted lip balm or lip stain, instead?
If you’re a committed lipstick wearer already, go for a new shade.
11 | Change Your Purse
Are you still using a nappy bag as your purse? Even though you potty trained your last child months ago??
I’m not telling you to bust out a Prada handbag to go to the grocery store.
But a stylish handbag that can’t double as a suitcase, can elevate your look from frump to chic AF.
12 | Do Your Makeup
I know! Who’s got the energy, right?
But I’m talking basics here, mama.
Nothing fancy, just some BB cream, mascara and you’re done.
Give it a try and see how your day goes.
13 | Plan your Outfits
I’d love to say I do this every day. But I don’t.
But when I do plan my outfits, I’m way more stylish and less likely to grab for the first yoga pants I see.
So take a little bit of time to plan the next week of outfits.
You can get super organized and label up some clothes hangers with the days of the week. Or you can just make a list on your phone. Whatever works for you.
14 | Accessorise!
Today, I challenge you to wear some piece of jewellery or accessory that you don’t normally wear.
That’s it. Nice and simple.
15 | Wear Something You Normally Save for Best
This one has ‘disaster’ written all over it, doesn’t it?
Obviously I’m not saying wear that expensive white silk shirt while you feed your toddler.
But those boots that you’ve been keeping for best deserve a walk out. And you deserve to wear them even if you aren’t meeting the queen for tea.
I’d love us to stop keeping things for best and enjoy them everyday.
Because everyday is a miracle and we are lucky to be alive. Let’s honour the day and its creator by making the best of it.
16 | Give Yourself a Manicure
Or treat yourself to the real thing.
You don’t have to go the whole way and get false nails. But neat, trimmed and elegantly polished nails will leave you feeling unstoppable. That’s a promise!
I always think you can tell a lot by a person by the state of their nails. I might be crazy but how a person takes care of their nails says a lot about how they take care of - and value - themselves in general.
What do your nails say about you right now?
17 | Check Your Basics
This is all about those wardrobe basics that you wear everyday.
Look, the reason French women are so stylish is because they invest in good quality basics that fit them like a second skin.
Think about the jeans and other clothes you wear most. Do they fit well? Or are you constantly adjusting your jeans, tugging at your shirt and generally feeling uncomfortable?
Make a list of things basics you need to replace and get browsing. You don’t have to buy anything now. Just go out and try some things on.
Get to know your shape and what suit you best.
18 | Give Yourself a Compliment
This might feel weird but do it anyway.
Take a look at yourself now and give yourself an honest compliment about your appearance.
Even better, challenge yourself to do this everyday.
Remember this is the body that birthed your babies and got you this far in life. Stop talking trash about it and love it right now.
Easier said than done perhaps.
But expressing gratitude and appreciation to your body on a daily basis will go a long way to making you feel fabulous. So give it a try. You have literally nothing to lose.
19 | Check Your Eyebrows
You might love the trendy fuller eyebrow look or still opt for finer more elegant brows. But you should have two eyebrows!!
Grab your tweezers or go to a professional and get your eyebrows tidied up.
20 | Do a Hair Mask
Take some time to treat your hair nice.
You can buy relatively inexpensive hair masks from your local store or find a DIY version on Pinterest.
21 | Wear a Skirt
This is one of those comfort zone busting challenges.
You might already wear skirts regularly. But if you don’t, wear one today. Obviously, layer with tights, leggings or boots if it’s winter.
22 | Choose your Shoes
If you’re going around all day in battered sneakers or some otherwise hideous footwear, stop right now.
Good shoes can really elevate an outfit.
And I don’t mean stilettos to do the school run.
Pull on some fabulous brogues, moccasins, ballet pumps, ankle boots or whatever else you have stashed away for ‘best’ at the back of your closet.
It’s just as easy to wear comfortably stylish boots as it is to wear shabby sneakers. Fact!
23 | Use the Rule of Three
Three seems to be a magic number.
In copywriting, interior design, comedy and style.
And when it comes to getting dressed, if you use the rule of three you’ll instantly make your regular outfits more stylish.
So what is the rule of three?
Well, you can think of your top and bottom as your first two pieces.
Your third piece might be a vest, scarf, statement necklace or any other layer.
Need an example? Need to know more?
Get ready for some serious ‘ah-ha’ moments.
24 | Schedule a Date Night
You might already do this.
But if you don’t, get your diary out!
Grab your husband, your most reliable babysitter and set a date. Doesn’t have to be fancy. Just fun.
And you have to get a tiny bit ‘glammed up’ for it.
25 | Identify your Uniform
We all have uniforms.
Your uniform is the clothes you wear everyday and the combinations, style and colors you pick time and time again.
Being aware of your uniform is the starting point for a more stylish you.
So take a look at what you’re wearing on heavy rotation. Are you a jumpers and jeans kinda girl? Or are you a skirt and cardigan girl?
Once you know your uniform you can begin to easily make little tweaks here and there.
26 | Do a Face Mask
Again, you can buy one or DIY one - as always, check out Pinterest!
And why not go wild and make this a regular part of your week?
27 | Wear A Color You Don’t Normally Wear
Stuck in a color rut?
Hiding in black, brown and beige?
Dive into your closet and grab something in a color you don’t normally wear. You’ll either love it or hate it. If you love it, wear it again. If you hate it, throw it in the donate bag.
28 | Ask Your Husband, Best Friend or Mother to Dress You
This one takes guts.
But no guts, no glory, right?
Ask your husband, best friend or mother to pick an outfit for you and wear it all day - as long as it’s appropriate!!
If that’s too scary, why not find a department store that has a free styling service and ask them to find you an outfit. Seeing how someone else sees you can help you unlock possibilities you’d never have tried.
And it’s fun. I promise.
29 | Find a New Up-Do
Yes, we’re keeping things super realistic here, mama!!
Instead of going for the usual top knot or hair claw, mix it up a bit with a new up-do. There are so many cute options on Pinterest.
I’m loving those 1940’s pin-up styles. And those French chignons are just too perfect for moms!!
30 | Give Yourself a Pedicure
Get your toes on board with a file and polish.
You’ll feel 10x more stylish even if you’re still wearing your yoga pants.
