9 Things the Military Taught me About Organizing (Because You're Fighting Hard in The Trenches of Motherhood and you Need This)

9 Things the Military Taught me About Organizing (Because You're Fighting Hard in The Trenches of Motherhood and you Need This)

It's no secret that soldiers are organized.

In the military soldiers who aren't organized are referred to as an  'admin nightmare', 'admin vortex' and the less affectionate 'cluster-f**k'. (Sorry, about the bad word, but soldiers swear.)

Being unorganized is seen as a very-bad-no-good thing in the military.

Spending nearly a decade in uniform, I noticed that the military treats organizing like any other skill. Something anyone can learn. Doesn't matter if you weren't born with a label maker in your hands, you can learn to be organized.

So today I'm spilling the camo-covered beans about getting organized soldier-style that you can use today. You won't even have to shave your head, do push-ups or shine any shoes, I promise.

How to Tackle a Huge-Ass Organizing Project (even if you have no time, no energy and no babysitter)

How to Tackle a Huge-Ass Organizing Project (even if you have no time, no energy and no babysitter)

Maybe you’ve just moved house.

Maybe you’re in pre-baby full nesting mode.

Maybe you just can’t take looking at that unorganized kitchen a minute longer.

As daunting as it seems, sometimes there’s no option but to reorganize a room from top to bottom.

If you’re thinking about taking on a big organizing project and wondering where to start, I’d like to try to make that whole process much less overwhelming for you.

Messy House Turning You into Mom-Zilla? 9 Ways to Put Your Home on Auto-Pilot

Here's a brainteaser for you...

What's the difference between a mamma who breezes through the day calmly like a ballerina on roller skates and a mamma who yells, snarls and stresses her way through the day?

OK, so there are lots of answers to that one.

But maybe one reason mamma is stressed is because she's brutally overworked. Every day there are hundreds of micro decisions to make. Every day there are dozens of things on the to-do list (and none of them is ' take a break and chill-the-F-out')

All those decisions and bullet points on the to-do list suck up a piece of mamma's serenity and sanity.

So what's the answer?

Frustrating, isn’t it?

It’s been a tough day. But the kids are finally asleep.

A sigh of relief.

You get some precious time to sit down and…

You notice that those new dishes you bought sitting on the kitchen counters waiting to be put away. But the cupboards are full.

And the laundry that needs putting away.

And then there’s that stack of papers on the table you’ve been meaning to deal with.

Just where are you supposed to start?
